about

DAKOTA from Amsterdam gets praises and high fives by Antwerpen/Hamburg-based dream pop duo THE DAY, with a playful and cheery cover version of Dakota's iconic hit "Icon".

"After i saw Dakota play in Arnhem in 2016, i couldn't stop talking about them and soon Gregor was a fan too," says Laura Loeters, The Day's singer and bass player. "Especially the song 'Icon' was the one we fell in love with after hearing it for the first time. So we knew right away that this was the song we wanted to cover."

Driven by shaky guitar-synth lines and decent electronics in the background, THE DAY's approach is slightly more shiny and definitely more 80ies-orientated than the original version. Which does not effect the lyrics after all, but adds an interesting, elegant spin instead. "Icon'" is about trying to be all that your cheating spouse wants you to be, but finally realising that there's just no way to do so. The only thing you can be and would ever want to be is yourself. Just never lose your dignity and grace.

Dakota released their debut album with it's programmatic title "Here's The 101 On How To Disappear" earlier this year. Lisa Brammer, Lana Kooper, Jasmine van der Waals and Annemarie van den Born blend washed-out walls of sound and sunny california feelings, driving garage rock and melancholic, meandering dream pop, and combine all this with clever and sharp, sometimes bitter observations about everything interpersonal. Forced to take a break from the band immediately after the album release due to health reasons, the bandmembers are re-arranging their creative energies. More reworks of their music will be released later in fall.

The Day are Laura Loeters from Antwerpen and Hamburg based Gregor Sonnenberg. Since meeting at ArtEZ School of Music in Arnhem the two keep reconciling distances, differences and always new approaches and perspectives, take charge of things themselves, trying out and growing on it together. The Day have released their debut album "Midnight Parade" this year and will be on tour again in October.
